Zellige tiles – The handmade tile way

Zellige tiles are a relatively new tile to the Australian market. However, surprisingly this Moroccan tile art-form dates as far back as the Mid 10th Century.

These tiles are originally found throughout Morocco in historic buildings. Today you will see them used in modern buildings throughout the world, making use of an expanded colour palette.

We have seen them pop up all over. It seems we have gone back to the past for design inspiration leading into the future.

You may be forgiven for thinking they are a trend – but it is more that we have only begun to discover this Handmade Tile tradition on our shores.

What characterises authentic Zellige, also known as Zilij or Zelij, is the variations of tone, shine, transparency of the glazing as well as the irregular surface texture.

This style of  is also available in a flooring format known as Bejmat.

Zellige tiles are traditionally handcrafted with natural clay extracted from the Fez region in Morocco. The clay is kneaded and moulded by hand, dried naturally then fired in a kiln.

Glass enamel is then applied to the surface of the raw tile, in multiple semi-transparent shades creating a pearlescent, metallic, volcanic or opaque finish. The enamel is melted and vitrified during a further firing in a kiln. The final step of production involves cutting the enamelled pieces into an endless collection of tile shapes and sizes.

Each Zellige tile is a unique piece, lovingly created by specialised craftsmen.
